Local Attractions
Located near the Devon-Cornwall county border we are ideally situated for visiting a wide range of attractions across two counties. The beautiful beaches of North Cornwall and Devon, the rugged appeal of Dartmoor and Bodmin moor and a huge selection of Heritage sites and tourist attractions are all within easy reach. Whether you enjoy visiting castles, gardens, museums, historical towns, or more active pursuits such as hiking, cycling, pony trekking, or water sports, we are sure there will be plenty for you to enjoy in Devon and Cornwall.
Our two nearest towns:
Launceston - commonly known as the Gateway to Cornwall. This delightful traditional Cornish town is the ancient capital of Cornwall, with much to appeal to visitors from the ornate carvings of St Mary Magdalane church, to the Norman motte-and-bailey castle, and a good range of shops, restaurants and pubs to suit every taste.
Holsworthy is an historic market town mentioned in the Domesday book. With an excellent outdoor Pannier Market every Wednesday, one of the largest livestock markets in the South West and a Farmer's market every 3rd Friday, Holsworthy is a thriving market town with a range of shops, cafes and pubs that make it well worth a visit.
Some local highlights:
Local attractions include the Tamar Otter and Wildlife Sanctuary, where you can take the opportunity to see British and Asian Short Clawed Otters at close hand, wander through the woodland area where Wallabies and Muntjac Deer roam freely, visit the Old Quarry waterfall, and see the Owl aviaries, peacocks and variety of waterfowl on the lakes.
Launceston Castle, a Norman motte-and-bailey castle owned by English Heritage, dominates the area around Launceston. The castle and surrounding area's 1000 year history is detailed in a display, and you can roam the grounds and climb the internal staircase to reach the tower top with its magnificent views of Launceston and its surrounds.
If you are interested in gardens, Winsford Walled Garden is situated not far from us. A garden which lay forgotton and in ruins until its rediscovery in 1999, it has some of the most ornate Victorian greenhouses in the SouthWest. You are encouraged to wander inside them to view the Bougainvillea and tropical hibiscus, and enjoy the beautiful garden borders, bamboo grove and of course the original English walled summer flower garden.
Another attractive Devon town which is has a great deal to offer visitors is Tavistock, a beautiful Devon market town on the edge of Dartmoor. Tavistock is a thriving town, with an award-winning Farmers' Market (come and see us there!), an excellent indoor Pannier Market open every day, plenty of shops and lots of places to eat and drink. Tavistock is the birthplace of Sir Francis Drake, and the town centre is home to the ruins of a Benedictine abbey founded in 961.
If watersports or angling are of interest to you, then don't miss Roadford Lake Angling and Watersports Centre, which provides a range of activities in a stunning location on the edge of Dartmoor. This 730 acre lake in picturesque surroundings is ideal not just for enjoying the watersports facilities and fishing, but gives nature lovers an excellent opportunity for observing local wildlife while on one of the various foothpaths around the lake. There are also tea rooms and a lakeside restaurant, with a children's play area and a specially built bird-hide from which to observe the wildlife.
Don't forget we are just 40 minutes from Bude on the Atlantic Coast, with its beautiful sandy beaches, scennc cliff top walks and of course surfing and sea fishing available. If you prefer the moors, then simply head in the other direction, as we are ideally located for visiting both Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor , both of which provide excellent opportunities for hiking, or just a leisurly stroll in the beautiful scenery followed by a drink in the pub if you prefer!
There are also a huge range of National Trust and English Heritage sites in the area for you to visit, including Rosemoor, Tintagel Castle, Lydford Castle and Gorge, Cotehele House and Mill, Buckland Abbey and much more.
